1 in 3 Americans will have Diabetes in 2050

I heard this news brief on the radio a few days ago and was disappointed in the lack of information presented. It is very newsworthy to inform us about the impending Diabetes epidemic, but what would really help is if NPR would also inform Americans that they can prevent Diabetes with a few easy lifestyle changes. It has been shown that walking briskly for 30 minutes 5 days a week alone can reduce the risk of Diabetes by almost 60%. Being overweight and obese are very closely linked with Diabetes. If people exercise regularly, reduce the amount of sodas, soft drinks, candy, refined breads, and begin eating whole fruits, vegetables and grains, the health benefits are tremendous. I think there a much more well rounded NPR article stating that exercise and lifestyle changes are more effective than medication for preventing Diabetes in people with pre-diabetes or elevated blood sugar.

Diabetes is a preventable disease, and a disease that can be controlled with exercise and diet. If you have any questions, or want to learn more please consult a health care professional. Incase you didn't know, in North Carolina, you can see a physical therapist without a referral.

Preventing Low Back Pain During Pregnancy

Physical Therapy and Myofascial Release can help you if you are experiencing back pain during your pregnancy.
Pregnancy is normal, pain is not. There are many changes happening in your body as your pregnancy progresses. Hormones are release that allow your joints and muscles to move easier so you can give birth. Your body also changes as your baby grows, and this shifts your center of gravity and as your body attempts to keep you upright, some of your muscles must now work harder. Any imbalance in your muscles or restrictions in your fascia may be exacerbated by this change in your body and can cause you pain or discomfort. To learn more about how we can help you watch the video below and visit our website www.LeBauerPT.com. Be sure to sign up for your free report titled "the hidden cause of back pain."

Headaches, Migraines and Craniosacral Therapy.

Craniosacral Therapy, Myofascial Release and Physical Therapy can help you. At LeBauer Physical Therapy we specialize in treating many conditions, including people who suffer from migraines and headaches, including cluster migraines, tension headaches and pain.

Craniosacral therapy addresses your craniosacral system, which is a fluid system that connects the base of your spine (your sacrum) to your cranium (your head), and it is a container for the fluid that surrounds your brain, spinal cord and nerves. Craniosacral therapy is a hands-on treatment that feels wonderful, relieves your pain, symptoms and headaches. A healthy craniosacral system is an important part of a comprehensive myofascial release treatment program and achieving balance in your whole body is the key to long-term relief of your symptoms.

Location, Location, Location

Did you know that the rate of spine surgery is related to geographic location? Spine surgery rates vary six-fold across geographic areas of the United States, including North Carolina. Differences in patient populations and health care supply have explained only about 10% of this variation. As well, you are also more likely to have spine surgery once you have an MRI or other advance imaging study. The indications for a patient receiving an MRI and advanced imaging is not widely agreed upon in the medical community. An MRI or any diagnostic procedure is indicated if the results will change your treatment plan. Physical Therapy and myofascial release are a safe, effective and inexpensive treatment for back pain, and you should be evaluated by a physical therapist before you receive an MRI or consider spine surgery.

Get Healthy!

Did you know that 44% of elementary students in Guilford County are overweight or obese? 29% of middle school, 30% of high school students and 60% of adults in Guilford County are also overweight or obese. Why does this matter? Obesity increases your health risks for diabetes, heart disease, stroke and certain cancers while certainly increasing health care costs. Being overweight can also cause increased stress on your joints and contribute to knee pain and arthritis and back pain.

What can you do about it? Walking 30 minutes a day at a brisk pace can significantly reduce your risk for developing diabetes, cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, osteoporosis, reduces your resting heart rate and blood pressure and lower your overall bodyweight and your percent body fat. Walk to the store, walk to your friends house, park at the other end of the parking lot, start an exercise program with guidance from your physical therapist or other health care professional and visit Get Healthy Guilford for other facts and health tips.

Remove that straight jacket and move!

We are all too familiar with the feeling of waking up in the morning, getting out of bed feeling tight, and uncomfortable in our body.

Some of us head to the shower and let the water run over our back, neck or shoulders in hopes that things will loosen up, many of us take a pill to mask the achy painful feeling.

What exactly is going on?

More importantly: How can we prevent this feeling from slowing us down in the wee hours of the morning?

Without stretching, strengthening and daily motion our bodies can become a straight jacket of immobility. Once supple muscles and fascia become dehydrated and tight, and begin to work like a vice on our skeletal system. The result is restricted range of motion and an uncomfortable body.

Long hot showers and anti-inflammatory pain medications can only mask the symptoms of this chronic condition. The only solution, and the most effective treatment is to MOVE! Yes, you heard me. MOVE YOUR BODY and MOVE IT OFTEN.

Stretch: Go to a yoga class, buy a yoga DVD, or create a home stretching routine that you can stick with and do it daily.

Strengthen: Go for a walk, go to the gym, buy a home DVD and get busy.

Move More: Continue to do your normal daily activities and be sure to incorporate your full range of motion.

As our body starts to deteriorate and become painful we start to move less and less. We sit in a chair while gardening instead of bending down on our knees. We avoid our daily walk because our ankle is achy. We take the elevator instead of the stairs because we get winded and it is uncomfortable. These small compensations contribute to our daily discomfort in a big way. It is important to be safe and listen to your body, but continue to move, and continue to be active in your daily life.

Start with these three simple rules:

1) Stretch

2) Strengthen

3) Move more

Try incorporating these simple and effective activities you will be on your way to pain free mornings and comfortable days living in your body.
