Study finds exercise and manipulation often reduce need for medication

Recent research out of Australia looked at people with chronic headaches stemming from the neck, called cervicogenic headaches. Such headaches are typically the most pronounced on one side, increase with neck postures or movements, and are associated with tenderness of upper neck joints.

The researchers compared the effect of treatment provided by specially trained physical therapists, which included either only manipulative therapy to the neck, only specific exercise therapy to the neck, or a combination of both therapies. The research subjects had treatment for six weeks. The researchers found that all treatments significantly reduced headache frequency and intensity and reduced neck pain, as compared to those who did not have therapy, with sustained improvement one year later."
